- Keep your hotel door locked at all times. Meet visitors in the lobby.
- Check your window in your hotel room to see that it is secure. This is especially true if your room is on the first or second floor or can be accessed from the roof
- Do not leave money and other valuables in your hotel room while you are out.
- Use the hotel safe if there is not one in your room.
- Let someone know when you expect to return if you are out late at night.
- If you are alone, do not get on an elevator if there is a suspicious-looking person inside.
- Read the fire safety instructions in your hotel room. Know how to report a fire.
- Be sure you know where the nearest fire-exit and alternate exits are located.
- Count the doors between your room and the nearest exit. This could be a lifesaver if you have to crawl through a smoke-filled corridor.
- Don’t leave your luggage unattended.
- Use the peephole and deadbolt lock on the door and window locks in your room.
- Ask hotel personnel write down your room number instead of saying it in front of others.
- In case of emergency, know where exits, elevators and public phones are located.
- Leave valuables at home or keep them in the hotel safe.
- If going out, ask hotel staff about neighborhood safety and areas to avoid.
- If someone claiming to be a hotel employee shows up at your room unexpectedly, call the front desk for confirmation before opening the door.
- Don’t display your room key or leave it where it may get stolen.

i find it completely idiotic to tell someone when you expect to be back. i know that if they’re your friend then they would help you but if it a complete stanger than they might break into your room while your gone! if you had given them the correct time of when you leave and return then (if they had enough time) would most likely break into your hotel room. i also saw the tip on leaving your belongings in a safe. what if you can’t take your clothing? most people can’t stuff something like that in a purse or pocket. what if there’s no hotel safe? your neighbor could just break in and steal everything given the correct time.
