Some trace the genesis of suicidal attacks by terrorists back to the 11th century assassins. Others, at least prior to the events of 9/11/01, recall the 2500 Japanese Navy “Kamikaze” or “divine wind” pilots who died in suicide attacks during WWII. The concept of suicidal attacks as a military weapon had been part of Japanese culture long before WWII, this as expressed in the code of the Samurai and the Bushido.
“When Nidal Hasan’s fellow students complained to the military medical school faculty about his ‘anti-American propaganda,’ a fear of appearing discriminatory against a Muslim student kept these officers from filing a formal written complaint,” thereby allowing him to remain in the military unchallenged for his beliefs, statements and ultimate actions.
