Some trace the genesis of suicidal attacks by terrorists back to the 11th century assassins. Others, at least prior to the events of 9/11/01, recall the 2500 Japanese Navy “Kamikaze” or “divine wind” pilots who died in suicide attacks during WWII. The concept of suicidal attacks as a military weapon had been part of Japanese culture long before WWII, this as expressed in the code of the Samurai and the Bushido.
