Security Tips For Using an ATM

Learn how to protect yourself when you’re using an ATM machine.

  • Always Be Observant

Watch out for suspicious persons, especially two or more people in a nearby vehicle. If you see someone who just appears to be “hanging” around the area; leave at once.

  • Use Drive-Up ATM

It is much safer to use a drive-up ATM machine, compared to walking up to one. Most ATM robberies occur between midnight and 6 a.m. Visit ATM’s during daylight hours. Always keep all windows closed except the one you are using, and all doors locked when using a drive-up ATM machine. Keep the car running and your eyes open for suspicious behavior. If someone approaches your vehicle on foot, cancel the transaction and leave immediately. If you must use a walk up ATM machine at night take a friend, try never to go alone.

  • Protect Your ATM Information

If you’re using a walk-up ATM machine, stand where the person behind you can’t see you putting your PIN into the machine.

Never write your PIN on the back of the ATM card or on a piece of paper. If someone steals your purse or wallet they will have quick access to your bank account through an ATM. Never leave receipts at the ATM, they often contain information that could be useful for an unlawful individual. Last but not least, never give account or card information over the telephone.

  • Leave at Once if Uncomfortable

If you see something strange or out the ordinary leave at once. Don’t stand at the ATM and count your money in public.

  • Verification

Always remember to keep your receipts to help verify any charges and activities at the end of the month.
