School Bus Stop Safety

Learn how to keep your children safe while they wait for the school bus.

  1. If at all possible, an adult should wait with children at the bus stop. Something could be worked out for all parents of children to be there on a rotating basis.

  2. Know the path your child takes to and from the school bus stop.

  3. Your child should avoid short cuts to the bus stop where they could be alone.

  4. Identify safe houses along the way that your child could run to for help.

  5. Remember no names on their backpacks, etc., as a potential abductor could then call out to your child by name.

  6. If your child is concerned for their safety, they should always tell you and their bus driver.

  7. If your child is approached by a stranger, they should tell you, their bus driver, and the school officials.

  8. Report any suspicious vehicles. Write down the license number and providing it to school and law enforcement officials.

  9. Stand away from any vehicle that stops near the bus stop and stay away from them.
  10. Run from anyone displaying a weapon. Throw your books and yell. Make as much noise as you can. NEVER go with an abductor. Kick, bite scream, but no matter what the threat, DO NOT go with the kidnapper. Once a child is taken, their chances of survival greatly diminish.
