Motive for Madness: The Pentagon Shooter

J. Patrick Bedell may have been on a one-man mission directed from the darkest recesses of his conspiracy-based mind when he was shot to death attempting to enter the Pentagon while armed with two 9mm handguns and dozens of rounds of ammunition.

An otherwise bright, 36-year-old who wrote that he earned a physics degree from UC, Santa Cruz, and studied both biochemistry and electrical engineering, he also wrote about his many complex scientific projects, like the creation of macroscale diamond structures and his desire to develop to the ability to sort biomolecules. Bedell also wanted to see “billions of carefully cultivated cannabis plants growing throughout the United States,” something he began by growing 16 such plants on his balcony in Irvine, CA in the spring and summer of 2006. This caused his run in with the local criminal justice system.

Bedell, who died of his wounds after an exchange of gunfire with Pentagon police in which two officers were slightly wounded, was a conspiracy theorist along the lines of Charlie Sheen and Rosie O’Donnell who believe that a controlled, internal explosion actually brought down the buildings in NYC in the 9/11 attack. Many holding similar beliefs also think it was a U.S. missile that actually hit the Pentagon in that same attack, one fired from a U.S. military plane. Such theories continue that the passengers on most, if not all four airliners that met similar fates that day were actually kidnapped by the U.S. Government and have been held ever since on some secret government island.

In the case of Bedell, he was obsessed with the 1991 death of USMC Colonel James Sabow, who investigators said committed suicide with a shotgun in his own El Toro, CA backyard. Others, including Bedell, believe that Sabow, a military pilot who flew over 200 missions in Vietnam, was murdered to stop him from reporting treasonous acts by members of the military. While some question the reason for, or the actually ability of the Department of Defense to cover up this alleged murder, others will quickly point out the May 2002 death of U.S. Army Ranger and former NFL star Patrick Tillman by friendly fire in Afghanistan. The military initially reported that Tillman was killed by enemy fire and only later admitted to the fog of war – friendly fire loss, causing some to further question if he had been intentionally “fragged” or killed on purpose by other soldiers, reason unknown.

Bedell apparently made up his mind that he was going to make some kind of terrible statement against the U.S. Government, the military, and the criminal justice system. The FBI has been able to determine that Bedell took several weeks to make the drive from his parents California home to Washington, DC. Writing in a Internet posting believed to be his, Bedell said that “he was determined to see that justice is served” in the death of Col Sabow, further indicating the truth about this case would be “a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions.”

Many people in the world are challenged by the events that take place around them. Some, perhaps like 89-year-old James W. von Brunn, the June 2009 shooter at the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, have what psychologists refer to as an encapsulated delusional system, something like the Tootsie roll pop of your youth. Here there is an inner core surrounded by a wider outer core. For some, their inner core or belief concerns conspiracies while their outer core, i.e., how they appear to us, is usually normal. But that inner belief continues to drive, to “inspire” the individual as his paranoia and delusional belief system grows. For von Brunn, it took almost 90 years for him to act out violently in his belief that the holocaust was a lie or myth created by Jews for their own purposes. Others, like U.S. Army Major Nidal Hasan, the November 2009 Ft. Hood shooter who, like Bedell, armed himself with two handguns and who fired into unarmed soldiers and civilians, killing or wounding over 50 before being cut down himself by responding police officers, wanted to make a statement in blood for religious and political purposes.

“Everyone is entitled to his own opinion,” said former U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “but they are not entitled to their own facts.” There are those who will forever refuse to accept “the facts” and will create their own concept of reality. Some choose to believe that man never walked on the moon, and that the July 1969 moon walk pictures were created on some Hollywood set. Others believe that Elvis is still alive and in the Federal Witness Program, while 70% of those polled believe that JFK died as the result of a conspiracy, possible government inspired. Yet other swear that TWA flight 800, aloft over the Atlantic in July 1996 with 230 souls onboard, did not accidentally blow up due to a short circuit that ignited fumes in a fuel tank, but was actually shot down by a missile fired from a U.S. Navy ship, with the investigation proving otherwise nothing but another government cover up. Finally I have had people swear to me that the Oklahoma City Federal Building was not actually blown up in April 1995 by Timothy Mc Veigh by means of a rental truck loaded with 5,000 pounds of ammonium and racing fuel, but in reality was struck by yet another missile fired from a U.S. military aircraft. The reason? Perhaps to give the government cause to go after militia groups across the country and disarm them…

Bedell apparently had his own challenged belief system along with his own personal gremlins that psychologically tortured him. In his case, like that of Andrew Joseph Stack, the 54-year-old tax protester who flew a small plane into the Austin, Texas IRS building just last month, he may just not have been able to take it anymore. And, as was the case with von Brunn and Stack before him, writings will be found and witnesses will be located who had reason to question the actions, the very sanity of Bedell. While he may have been trying to make some extreme statement against the military and the events surrounding 9/11, his plan, one that appeared to mirror the actions of other challenged individuals before him, was so misdirected as to suggest a sad man who brought about his own death in a world he just didn’t understand or agree with. What if we all disagreed to this extent?

I liked the article. It was well written and very captivating. I would only ask, that in future articles, that you provide us with some profiling analysis, so we can also learn a bit more about the mindset and characterizations of the suspect’s mind.

    Thank you.
