The investigation, one that has always considered the possibility that Harrington’s disappearance was related to a crime, will quickly move into a new phase. Twenty-year-old Harrington was last seen at the University of Virginia (UVA), Charlottesville, on October 17, 2009.
Harrington and a group of friends had long before that date purchased tickets for the UVA Metallica concert and had looked forward to that date. The small group of friends drove to the concert in Harrington’s car with one young woman retaining the car keys for the drive home. Some time before Metallica took to the stage, Harrington left the group, reportedly to go to the rest room. She somehow wound up outside of the concert hall and was refused re-entry into the venue. Harrington called her friends from her cel phone, informing them of her plight and indicated that she would find her own way home. Her friends let her do this.
She was allegedly seen outside of the arena by a number of witnesses, some who suggested she was “wobbling” as she walked, while others thought she had been injured, perhaps with blood on her chin. Yet other witnesses suggest seeing her with a group of four men, perhaps the same four men other witnesses saw with her in the nearby RV parking lot, the location where her purse and her broken cel phone were later found. Members of the UVA basketball team also saw her as did yet other witnesses who said someone resembling Harrington was hitchhiking on or near a local bridge close to the concert hall. While police have since received hundreds of tips and alleged sightings of Harrington, and have recovered three unrelated bodies along the way, Harrington has not been located, until today that is.
A cattle farmer in Albermarle County, near Charlottesville, reported to police that he had found the decomposed body of a blond-haired woman, wearing black clothing (like that worn by Harrington the night she disappeared), on his 500-700 acre farm. The skeletized remains were located at 8:30 am today by the owner of Anchorage Farm, David Bass, on a remote part of the farm (10 miles south of the arena) that he had not been to since last cutting hay last August. While not providing the media with the exact location of the body, Bass stated it was “nowhere near a highway,” suggesting, perhaps, that the person or persons disposing of the body perhaps knew their way around the area and had the means to get to that remote location over 1 1/2 miles from the nearest road. Harrington’s parents, who previously provided investigators with their missing daughter’s dental records and presumably samples for DNA comparison, were enroute to the body recovery site to assist in the identification of the remains.
The entire area surrounding the body disposal site will be handled like an ancient archeological dig. The body will be carefully removed and the surrounding soil will be sifted through ever smaller strainers as investigators look for any type of evidence related to the crime scene. Like a real-life episode of “CSI,” investigators will be looking for evidence that could link the victim to her suspected assailant(s), to include DNA, hairs and fibers and any other possible evidence nearby the body. A stray cigarette butt could contain the DNA of a suspect, a tire track could relate to an assailant’s vehicle, and any evidence found will be processed in an attempt to find some small link to the victim’s assumed killer.
The body will be taken by the local medical examiner to verify the victim’s identification and to determine the cause and method of her death. Blunt force trauma and stabbing could be evidenced by damage to the victim’s skeletal structure, although weather and even animal activity could complicate this examination. Damage or injury to the victim’s hyoid bone could suggest that she had been chocked to death, but again, sometimes cause of death can be difficult to determine in such cases.
Some will recall the 2005 disappearance of 17-year-old Virginia Commonwealth University freshman Taylor Behl. Her remains were found in a shallow grave in rural section of Virginia. A 38-year-old man she had met on the Internet was later convicted for her death. Virginia has recently experienced large amounts of snow and rain, and should the victim’s remains have been buried or covered over, the actions of weather may have actually helped uncover the remains so that they could be seen by Mr. Bass. Police now have potentially their most important piece of evidence, the victim’s body, as well as a crime scene. With over 600 leads and tips called in to authorities to date, each may now need to be re-reviewed to determine its value, this as investigators now know they have a murderer to find.
In discussing the disappearance of her daughter, Mrs. Harrington acknowledged the presence of evil in this world but also suggested the trick is to choose not to let it (evil) defeat you, letting the pain you feel open you to the pain of others and to allow you to make connections rather than pull away from the world. She said that her daughter’s disappearance (and now death) should not ruin the lives of others, otherwise evil and the person she believed had kidnapped (and now perhaps murdered) her daughter would win. While she acknowledged the picture she had long held of her daughter’s life had been fractured, she still felt the shards could be re-arranged into a mosaic; different and abstract, but still beautiful and precious. I hope she and her husband can hold onto those words and remember Morgan as she was, and not, unfortunately, as she now is.

Mr van zandt:I have always believed that Morgan harrington’s friends, who attended the concert with her, did not tell police the whole story(or any story) that night in oct 2009, when they still may have been able to find Morgan in time..they did not even tell her parents Morgan became separated from them, nor did they tell her parents that they left the arena in MORGAN’s CAR,BUT WITHOUT MORGAN!her parents were left unaware of anything, until Sunday, the next day, when they reported her missing..perhaps an alert from her pals on sat nite would not have saved Morgan, but it may have helped police in finding her(or her killer) sooner..the perp had too much of a head start….why would a girl leave her seat, right before her fave group in the world was to come on stage? the reason why she left the arena, either on purpose, or accidently,is still quite a mystery, even to those of us who have followed this story since oct 2009…if she was sober when she disappeared,my theory goes like this:i believe somebody must have promised her she would meet the group, but told her that he could only help her, not 5 other people..this may be why she agreed to meet that person alone, later in the evening..perhaps he made a promise of autographs, backstage pass, etc..if she were drunk when she disappeared,my theory goes something like this:,perhaps she did leave the arena accidently, then panicked when she realized she could not re-enter, per their policy..in that case, she may have seen an acquaintance outside, and accepted a ride from them, only because she had no other option…my last q.is,if she was in a panic, and did not expect to be left stranded outside the arena, why didnt she tell her friends the truth on the phone, instead of saying to them”dont worry, ill get a ride home from someone else”? could it be, that someone forced her(maybe had her at knifepoint?) to make that last call,so her friends would not come looking for her..maybe the perpetrator threatened her(or the friends’)safety, if she did not go along with him.i am very sorry that her remains have been found, but i am also glad that her remains were found in a place in which she could not have arrived at by herself..this proves she had to have been killed there,or taken there after she was killed,by someone else..at least, that will stop all of the bloggers with their stupid theories of Morgan’s supposed”suicide”, or “drug overdose”,in which she gets high or drunk, and simply”wanders off” to the field at Anchorage farms, passes out,and dies there….the fact that she was found 1.5 miles from any vehicle entry/roadway, proves she could not have gone into that property by herself..just my 4cents worth..let us pray they find those responsible and bringt hem to justice..kathy f.
She probablyy died either from alcohol poisoning or the freezing temperatures when she hitched a ride heading to JMU or Blacksburg, and she changed her mind and told the driver to stop and let her out near Anchorage Farms, where she wandered in the woods and passed out.
If there is a killer running around loose, then why would authorities hold back so much information about this case, especially now?
@Cee Cee are you okay? It’s been well known for a long time now that she was murdered with broken bones. This article was written in January and her death was immediately ruled a homicide. She would of had to wander 1 1/2 miles into the farm before passing out by your accounts, not likely, even without her being murdered.
Toni,
Yes, I am okay thanks.
The rumor mill has spun the story of murder and broken bones for “a long time,” sure, but law enforcement hasd not chosen to release a statement along those lines when I wrote my original comment, so until they do otherwise as far as I’m concerned rumors are just rumors.
When dead things lie outside for months in fields or woods, scavenger animals ravage and break bones. However disgusting and reprehensible that this happened to Morgan, in nature this is nothing new or unusual.
Also it is not difficult to grasp that just because her body was found “miles” from the entrance of AF, doesn’t mean she had to have wandered from the gated front entrance of that remote farm to where her remains were found.
Anyone familiar with the area would know that the neighborhood McMansions of Blandemar Estates back up to within yards of where Morgan’s remains were found. She could have been dropped off at a party going on at one of those houses that night, and too many drugs or too much alcohol was consumed.
I did write my original comment before it was released by Law Enforcement officials that forensics linked the Fairfax assault suspect to Morgan’s case, so now perhaps it is a non-issue. Or perhaps not.
