Powell’s husband, Josh, has steadfastly claimed that around midnight on December 6, 2009, he unexplainedly loaded his and Susan’s two young boys, ages 2 and 4, into the family van and headed out into the night and into a Utah snow storm to go camping for the evening. When he returned the following day, “surprise-surprise,” his wife was missing and has never been seen or heard from since. Josh and his two boys eventually moved back to Washington State to live with his father, Steven Powell. Many searches have been conducted for Susan but to date, her whereabouts and fate remains unknown. Interview of one of her sons revealed that “mommy is the mine looking for crystals,” or words to that effect, but searches of pits and mines miles from the Powell home continue to meet with negative results.
Enter Steven Powell. The senior Powell has continued to stand by his son Josh, supporting Josh’s story that Susan likely ran off with another man (sounds like the excuse given by former Chicago area police officer Drew Peterson in the disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy, while remaining the only suspect in the murder of his third wife, Kathleen…) Steven Powell, described by Susan to friends as “creepy,” crawled down to a new low in family relationships when he recently announced to the media that he had enjoyed an ongoing sexual affair with his own son’s wife, Susan, one allegedly unknown by Josh and denied by all who knew her. To quote the senior Powell, ”Susan was very sexual with me.” “We interacted in a lot of sexual ways because Susan enjoys doing that.” Now Steven Powell appears to have even further confirmed his creepy status when a recent police search of his residence revealed more than 2,000 poronographic-like images of girls and women, contained on videotapes and CDs, that were seized from his bedroom in the August 25 search. Many images were of minor females, to include two girls, ages 8 and 10, who once resided next door to Steven Powell in 2006-2007. Also contained in these many graphic pictures were images of Susan Powell. The local prosecutor indicated many of the pictures focused on the buttocks, breasts and genital areas on the bodies of the girls and women, images apparently made without the various victim’s knowledge or consent.
Steven Powell has now been arrested and charged with multiple counts of voyeurism and possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. His two grandsons, the children of missing Susan, have been taken into protective custody after residing in this home for over one year.
Although Josh has always been the only logical person of interest in his wife’s disappearance and assumed death, now his father rears his own ugly head, proving himself to be not only a likely lier and lecher, but also a pervert of the first degree. But can this new situation also present police with a potentially new suspect or co-conspirator in Susan’s disappearance, perhaps a new motive for murder? Police surely are considering the whereabouts of Steven Powell on December 6-7, 2009, the night when Susan disappeared. If his whereabouts cannot be positively confirmed that night, could he have aided his son in some manner and/or could he have been solely responsible for the young mother’s disappearance, perhaps a deadly continuation of the fantasy that he alone enjoyed concerning Susan?
Steven’s estranged daughter, Jennifer Graves, is suspicious of her father’s potential involvement in her friend’s (Susan’s) disappearance. Graves indicated she knew her father collected magazines and things of a sexual nature, further stating she knew her father’s character, indicating “He’s got a pretty sick problem there.” She had previously refuted any relationship between Susan and her father.
So now the 61-year-old father-in-law of the missing wife and mother, the man who with a grin told television audiences that he had an ongoing sexual relationship with his own son’s wife, the man who continued to suggest that Susan liked to play around; well he now stands charged as a sneak, a pervert, and just, as Susan described him to others, as an overall creepy guy. Will his arrest potentially lead to the resolution of Susan’s disappearance, perhaps implicating him and/or his son in the soon to be two-year-old mystery? One thing is for sure, this is “not” a cold case by any means and it gets hotter by the minute. Like father, like son? We’ll soon see…
